March 8th, 2013: Wu received a court document from the Zhuhai Middle Court, stating the it received an order from Beijing Middle Court asking Wu to pay a fine of 2.5 million Yuan within 10 days of receiving the Court Notice, or the Court will take legal action and force Wu to do so. In this document, the Court said this was based on a prior case against Wu dating back to the year 2000 in which Wu was charged and convicted of “Economic Crimes.”
As is commonly understood, the Chinese government regularly uses charge of “economic crimes” to silence its critics. In the case against Wu from 2000, in addition to the court’s failures to apply the law to the facts of Wu’s case, it also illegally sentenced him. Specifically, Article 179 and Article 225 both provide for a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, yet Wu was in prison for ten years. In addition, the fine of 2.5 million Yuan ($423,728) was illegal. Under Article 179, the fine can be no more than five percent of the funds that are alleged to be illegally raised. According to the indictment, Wu raised approximately 20 million Yuan. Thus, the maximum fine should have been one million Yuan ($169,491).
The Chinese government is trying to forever restrict the freedoms of this Han Buddhist leader. Even though the fine is illegal, Wu will attempt to pay it by borrowing the funds. Even if he does pay the fine, there is no guarantee that he will be able to secure his passport subsequently.
In three days, on March 12nd, Wu received money from all over the country. Most of them did not leave message or name. Thus, Wu sent an Thank You message and wrote a poem for this affair.
